Ogden Standard Examiner Opinion
Case shows need for tender, realistic care
            Fri, July 20, 2001 00:00:00
I read with interest the July 14 news article concerning Dr. Weitzel
("Davis prosecutors under fire"). I have read and re-read all the
charts in question and cannot find where one could draw the
conclusion of morphine overdosage. Perry Fine was in agreement with
            that as well.
Fine is considered by many in the field of pain management to be the
nation's leading authority on end-of-life issues. This was stated in
an article about him in one of the publications of the American
            Society of Anesthesiology.
My other comment is, if Dr. Fine's testimony was considered to be
opinion, then why would Dr. Hare's testimony not be considered
            opinion?
This case illustrates tragically the need for compassionate and
realistic end-of-life care. I emphasize, this is not euthanasia.
