Letter from California
To the Editor,
I have reviewed the website of Dr. Weitzel and read the astounding testimony of Dr. Perry Fine. What is extremely obvious is that the Davis County Attorney and his helpers acted completely irresponsibly and unethically in the Weitzel case. They prosecuted without cause, used unfair tactics, and now refuse to admit their mistakes. It is clear to me from the records that the prosecution knew before Weitzel's first trial that there were serious problems with their theories and claims against Weitzel, but the prosecution refused to reconsider the case. When Dr. Fine, an expert in pain management and end-of-life care told prosecutors Weitzel had committed no crime and acted within appropriate medical bounds, the prosecution ignored this relevant medical testimony and persisted with the case. Worse, the prosecutors failed to disclose this testimony to the defense. What is apparent is that Davis County Attorney's flagrantly disregarded their professional obligations and have seriously undermined public trust in the judicial process. When any lawyer cheats, misleads, and omits crucial information to convict someone it isn't a "technicality;" it's unethical and a flagrant abuse of the justice system. Unfortunately, the Davis County prosecutors don't have the moral fortitude to acknowledge their wrongdoing; it's time for the public to do it for them.
