Letter from Indiana
I have evaluated the cases used against Dr. Weitzel and I am absolutely
shocked! If these are the criteria for murder in Utah, virtually every
physician in America who took care of dying patients could be
prosecuted. This is absolutely ridiculous and is yet another situation
where attorneys and law-enforcement agencies are attempting to destroy
the relationship between physicians, patients, and their families and
take away the ability of doctors to make critical decisions in the best
interest of the patients. By the way, at the end of the day we are all
patients. Incidentally, it is also the responsibility of the nursing
staff (who actually administer the drugs) at any institution to evaluate
the patient at the time of administration and refrain from dosing if it
appears that such medication could be lethal. If the prosecutors were
correct(by some incredible stretch of the imagination) that these folks
were actually deliberated killed by morphine administration, then the
actual nurses who delivered the doses would be guilty of culpable
negligence. I have seen no indication that they have been targeted in
this investigation.
Sincerely,
Lawrence Bailey, MD
